'For three days I was but lost in music, adoration of, and admiration for Rob da Bank. For it was, undoubtedly, his finest festival yet.'

Dots & Dashes round off the summer festival season with da Bank’s bestest Bestival to date, highlights of which came from the most reliable of sources (The xx & Stevie Wonder & Sigur Rós) as well as other boys less likely to (Kwes. & Errors & John Talabot)…

Bestival 2012, 6th-9th September 2012.

Recorded at the Toronto Jazz Festival last Friday, here’s a long-overdue new number from Janelle Monáe who, despite avowing to having written quite precisely “84.799%” of not one, but two new records over six months ago hasn’t been furnishing us with anywhere enough of this lustrous soul stuff of late. Clunkily bootlegged, it’s a little hefty on the ol’ rhythmic side o’ things although even when submerged in the mix Monáe’s sublime vocals remain palpably buoyant and irrefutably palatable.

Monáe returns to the UK at long last next month for Friday of Latitude…

Now established as a fundamental element of Bestival’s expansion into a four-day fling, Thursday evening’s Back To The Phuture bill has this afternoon been announced. Perfectly incongruous with this year’s overall Wildlife theme, the festive mainstay is this year headed up by previously announced quirk-pop types Hot Chip, whose forthcoming LP In Our Heads really is quite honestly superb. It’s arguably their finest work to date and it’s been stuck on ceaseless rotation ever since it flumped through figurative letterbox earlier on in the week. They’re to be joined by industrial engineer Gary Numan and Athens’ hairiest – or at least heaviest – Alabama Shakes. However newcomers to the summer’s final throw-down include worldweary anti-troubadour Willis Earl Beal, the lustrous future of British pop Jessie Ware, and our beloved Sunless ‘97.

The full line up thus far, still short of one headliner somewhere or other between September 6th-9th, looks a little something like:
