It was indeed – at least relatively – rather world (wide web)-consuming news when the collaboration between Major Lazer and Dirty Projectors’ Amber Coffman broke. The former have never quite clicked with me, Diplo and Switch never having seemed to ’click’ themselves as it were despite roping in the likes of Santigold, Nina Sky, Amanda Blank etc. on vocal duties. However, whether or not down to the departure of Switch, it’s here the weird one that works: spearheaded by Coffman’s acrobatic vox, Get Free swiftly flickers into an irradiate R’n’B number to again defy expectations. Coffman coos of “Coming down, feelin’ like a battery hen” over some quite splendid dub undercurrents that, were the inept yet tragically effective Calvin Harris to have released them and roped in some mildly talented bimbette to surf atop them then the result would surely blare from London’s every aural orifice. Tumbling guitars evocative of those shot from David Longstreth’s shining white Strat combine beautifully too, whilst simultaneously contextualising and homogenising Coffman’s otherworldly vocals to something a little more familiar. Totally sensational.

Get Free is available for free for the meagre price of an email address, whilst Major Lazer play Shepherd’s Bush Empire tomorrow night
